THE
BALNEOTHERAPY
The "Villa
dei Cedri" mineral water is low in mineral content, rich in bicarbonate -
calcium - magnesic, and with a certain quantity of silica. The temperature
of the water is approximately 37 °C. In other words it flows at a higher
temperature than any of the other mineral waters in Italy, which are
normally cold (between 5 °C and 18 °C). This water is very light, with a
low content of fixed solids, rare in thermal and hyperthermal waters,
which usually have a salt-bromine-iodic or sulphide content, making them
unsuitable for drinking. The "Villa dei Cedri" spring water however can be
used both in balneotherapy and for drinking.

Balneotherapy
The "Villa dei Cedri" hot-spring water has been certified
for balneotherapy by the Ministry of Health with a decree
dated 7th of November 1996. The thermal baths consist of
the full immersion of the body in the water, leaving just
the head above water. The average duration of the bath is
about 30'.
A therapeutic cycle is generally 10 - 15 baths taken
daily. The utility of balneotherapy is based on two
factors: one which is non-specific, hydrotherapy of a
physical kind in a broad sense, in relation to the
hydrostatic pressure and the temperature of the water;
and one which is specific, pharmacological, associated
with the organoleptic characteristics of the water.
The hydrostatic pressure can simply be that of the
weight of the water above the body, or it can vary from
1 to 3 atmospheres in balneotherapy with hydromassage.
This makes movements possible in the water that would be
impossible for the same person out of the water, with
positive results in the treatment of arthrosis, extra-articular
rheumatism, and traumas, etc..

Therefore balneotherapy is effective in rehabilitation
therapy, sports medicine, as well as in treating
dermatological conditions. Furthermore, the hydrostatic
pressure determines peripheral vasoconstriction with a
reduction of the plasma and the interstitial liquids of
the extremities and compression of the abdominal organs,
favouring the venous reflux due both to the rising of
the diaphragm and to the squeezing effect of the vessels
in the peripheral bloodstream. Furthermore, with
hydromassage you speed up the metabolism of the tissue
by reactivating microcirculation. Hydromassage is
suitable for those of all ages and it is an effective
means of prevention and treatment for some of the most
frequent degenerative illnesses, caused by stress or
sedentary life. All these modifications occur with baths
at a thermo-indifferent temperature (33 - 35 °C).
The "Villa dei Cedri" spring water flows at a
temperature similar to that of the human body, and is
used immediately as soon as it comes out of the ground.
This is a big advantage. In fact is doesn't need to be
heated or cooled, as occurs in other spas; this process
would eliminate many of the natural properties of the
water. The specific properties of any kind of water
produce diversified therapeutic results.
The "Villa dei Cedri" spring water can be sued
for:
non-acute pathologies of the motor system (osteoarthrosis
in its various forms and localizations, and pathologies
of orthopaedic and traumatological nature, etc.)
consequences of phlebitis
peripheral vascular pathologies
motor
rehabilitation
coetaneous conditions such as seborrhoea, seborrhoea
eczema, dermatitis, allergic dermatosis, psoriasis,
nettle-rash, etc.
aesthetic treatment of conditions of the venous and
lymphatic vessels.
Lastly, one important application of this water is its
aesthetic use, in other words for looking after your
skin, to keep it elastic and to favour the renewal. The
"Beauty Farm" in the "Villa dei Cedri" has a line of
cosmetics prepared using the water from the Thermal
Park.
